Takes about ten seconds, and it doesn't commit you to anything. You're just first in line if you want it.
A hotel in Paris upgraded me to a small suite. It was beautiful. The air conditioning was in the living room, and the bedroom had none, just whatever cool air made it through the doorway.
I lay there the first night sweating and exhausted and furious with myself for not asking before I unpacked.
The next morning I went down to the front desk and asked to move. They put me in a regular room, smaller, lower floor, nothing special about it at all, with an air conditioner I could set to whatever I wanted. I slept better the next four nights than I had in weeks.
Giving up an upgrade to get a decent night’s sleep is not a trade I would have made ten years ago. It’s the trade I make now, and my trips got better the day I started making it.
I’m Lisa. Matt and I have traveled full time for nearly a decade, carry-on only, through close to 100 countries, and I’ve done most of it while managing all of this.
I was 43 when it started. Hot flashes out of nowhere, sleep that stopped coming, brain fog, exhaustion that didn’t make sense, and periods that vanished for months and then turned up at the worst possible moment. Nobody in my life talked about perimenopause. When I finally went to a doctor she thought I was too young for it. I pushed, I got the tests, and I was right.
I figured the travel part out on my own because there was nothing to read. That’s what this is.
Travel Through Menopause walks through a trip the way you actually take one. What goes in the bag now that your old packing list is working against you. The flight. The hotel room. What you eat and drink and what it costs you later. How to pace the days so the second half of every day isn’t a write-off.
Then a chapter on the hard moments, because they still happen after you’ve done everything right, and a quick reference at the back you can screenshot and keep on your phone.
HERE’S WHAT’S INSIDE:
The favorite piece of clothing you may need to give up, and why it isn’t your imagination
Where to sit on a plane now, and the one seat to stop booking
The two questions to ask a hotel before you arrive, not at midnight
What to put in the seat pocket before takeoff
The upgrade worth turning down
The one thing to test at home before every trip
How to build a day so the afternoon feels as good as the morning
What to do at 3am when it isn’t working
The conversation to have with whoever you’re traveling with, before you go
Plus the whole system on one page at the back, for packing and for the road.
