Your prescription proves a doctor ordered it.

It doesn’t get it across a border.

Most people assume the prescription settles it. It doesn’t. Airport security and the border are two different checks, and you may have to pass both. Traveling with Medication is the order I do things in, worked out traveling with my mom’s MS medication, Matt’s prescriptions, and my own. It comes out soon, and everyone who signs up here gets a discount when it does. Drop your name below and I’ll email you the moment it’s live.

The first time I flew internationally with my mom after her MS diagnosis, a security officer pulled her cold pack out of the bag.

My mom didn’t blink. She’s a retired nurse. She knew exactly what was in there and why.

I was the one standing there realizing I couldn’t have answered a basic question about it. What were the rules for the medication, the needles, and the pack keeping it cold?

We went through without a problem. But afterward I looked up what would have happened if we’d been crossing a border with different medication rules, instead of clearing airport security. It turns out those are two different checks, and I hadn’t known that.

Then Matt had emergency back surgery in Vienna in 2024. We had a flight home to get through, medications to manage, and an injectable prescribed for the trip. Neither of us had ever packed one before.

I’m Lisa. Matt and I have traveled full time for nearly a decade, carry-on only, through close to 100 countries. Medication isn’t an unusual exception in our family. It’s a line on the packing list.

None of it is hard once you know what to check and when. So I wrote it all down.

Traveling with Medication walks through it in the order you actually do it. Checking what’s really in what you take, and the rules for every country on your route. Getting the supply and the paperwork sorted at home. Packing for the bag you might lose. Making a temperature plan that survives a delay. And knowing your first move when something goes wrong.

I’m a traveler, not a clinician, so it doesn’t tell you what to take. It tells you what to check, who to ask, and when to ask them.

HERE’S WHAT’S INSIDE:

  • The one word on the label that matters more than the brand name

  • Two ADHD medications, one country, two completely different answers

  • The drugstore cold medicine that can need a permit before you land

  • The sleep aid that’s on the shelf at home and prescription-only in the UK

  • When a doctor’s letter is worth getting, and what it can’t fix

  • The bag your medication should never be in, even when it’s a carry-on

  • The four questions to ask your pharmacist before a long travel day

  • Why an eight-hour cooling case doesn’t cover a seven-hour flight

  • Your first move if your bag gets gate-checked, a bottle gets left behind, or an officer has questions

Plus two checklists, one for before you go and one for travel day, and a medication travel card to fill in for anything that needs special planning.
